Poetry, social equality, local culture and low cost combined in the construction of a public school for 360 children in southern Chile

Another example of how architecture that respects local culture and technology, can improve life of Latinamerican children who find themselves in difficult and vulnerable situations

This project regards children of fishermen in the neighbourhood of Fátima, in the island of Chiloé. One of the aims of the project is to create opportunities for these children to integrate and participate in the future development of the country.

In a place with one of the highest rates of pluviometry in the world, of 2000-3000 mm/year, our challenge was to cosntruct a large covered space, a school for the children of the area. To achieve this goal, it was necessary to avoid using cement and iron, which was the method encouraged and applied by the national Government.

It took our team 4 years to arrive at an agreement with the Ministry of Education, and to finally receive the permission to build the wooden school. By using wood as construction material, instead of cement and iron we were able not only to respect and use local know-how and traditions, but also to spend the funds wisely, and build more square metres than what would be expected of covered space, as well as space for leisure and play for the children

Otro ejemplo de como la arquitectura, respetando las culturas y tecnologías locales, puede mejorar la vida de niños latinoamericanos en situación vulnerable. Hijos de pescadores del barrio de Fátima, en la isla de Chiloé, aumentan sus posibilidades de integrarse al desarrollo del país

En un lugar con una de las más altas pluviometría del mundo, donde llueve entre 2000 a 3000mm/año, el desafío fue, construir la mayor cantidad de superficie cubierta para los niños de esta escuela. Para este objetivo debíamos cambiar el sistema constructivo en cemento y acero que oficialmente establece el gobierno de Chile. Esto demandó una larga discusión de 4 años con el Ministerio de Educación para hacer un edificio de madera. Con esta modificación logramos también, respetar la gran tradición de arquitectura en madera de los carpinteros locales y disminuimos el costo de construcción. Así pudimos construir más metros cuadrados cubiertos de patios y espacios de juego para los niños
