Text Jorge Lobos

University Austral of Chile, UACH, joined to “Architecture and Human Rights” to work in five humanitarian cases with a new academic methodology. We studied different architectural themes in each work group comparing the situation in the 5 study cases; Valdivia.cl, Mumbai.in, Cairo.eg, Tokio.jp, Madrid.es

It meant to finish the course with a rich rainbow of diverse solutions for each case: Density, borders, meeting places, constructive systems, waste recycling, amongst others themes. These topics allowed to face these difficult and complex social problems with a simple strategy.

Latin America, Santiago of Chile May 2012

Megacities, emergencies and social crisis

Mumbai, Cairo, Madrid, Tokyo and Santiago of Chile:
What it will happen if we have a humanitarian emergency in a megacity of millions of inhabitants?

Text Jorge Lobos

Following ideas of the workshop 5×5 in Copenhagen, we were interested to know how another university with another cultural background would reply the same questions? School of Architecture of University of Chile accepted the challenge. In Santiago we developed different strategies with the teachers Rodrigo Toro, Fernando Dowling and Igor Rosenman and their students, for these complex social cultural cases:

1- Measurement time and space in public demonstration in Santiago of Chile, a way of represent the people power on the streets.

2- Vertical demonstration for “Los indignados” of Madrid

3- Floating gardens like a new public space against panic in Tokyo

4- A recycled textile cover streets and new public spaces on the building terrace in the called “garbage city” of Cairo, where Christian Copts live and work recycling garbage of 17 millions of Cairo inhabitants, between another ideas of projects.

5- Bambu structures for Mumbai slums

Latinoamérica, Santiago de Chile, Mayo 2012

Megaciudades, Emergencias y Crisis sociales

Low cost wooden school for 1000 children in Chile

Pudeto School is an example of how contemporary architecture can enhance social values such as equality and social justice – issues that are relevant for Latin America and the entire world

Translation Monica Johansson

In Ancud Chiloé, Architect Jorge Lobos interpreted the constructive values of the local culture and designed this school made of wood, and coloured glass – 4700m2 for 1080 children in one of the poorest places of the country, the fishing town Pudeto.

The Project was originally planned to comprise about 50% of the area, which was eventually constructed. Chilean Governmental rules for construction allow to use mainly cement and iron for building. Specific condition occur, however, in the southern part of Chile, where there is an excellent knowledge in the field of wood construction. Moreover,

Chiloé Island has a long tradition of wooden architecture, outstanding carpenters and extensive forests. The negotiation prior to starting the project went on for approximately 4 years. Good results were, however, eventually achieved, since construction in wood instead of cement and iron made the final cost drop by 45%.
